The joy of ice

gregh  2007-12-11 17:37

This New York Times story about the mayor of Mexico City setting up an ice rink dredged up fond memories of being on the ice.

Despite the bumps and bruises, most people came off the ice beaming.

“The first time is a very wonderful adventure,” said Judith Fuentes, a 35-year-old mother who had let her 8-year-old daughter, Ilian, skip school to skate. “I don’t think it’s a waste. On the contrary, it entertains people who don’t even have enough money to go out.”

There really is little else like it. I used to be a reasonably decent skater myself, and for years I've been saying I'll get back to hockey (and back to skating)... When I drop some weight, so I won't kill myself if I fall... When I get in shape... When I stop working so many hours... When I get out of law school...

Someday...

I haven't talked to the family in Kansas to see if they'd go along with the title... (Though the news reports suggest they've escaped the worst of it.)
